Getting a Computer Science Degree Online
Saturday, October 18th, 2008It is easy to imagine that computer science degrees are naturally ideal candidates for online degree programs. Indeed, online computer classes would not exist today if not for well-trained grads of the program. Over the last ten years, online learning has really become a legitimate option, especially for students who demand more flexibility in their schedules. Computer science degrees are a very popular and sought after degree and very practical.
You must first decide if an online program is a good fit for you. If you are the type of person who prefers face time with a professor in an actual classroom, then computer based learning may not be right for you.
If you do decide to pursue a computer science degree online, first research the accreditation status of each school that you are contemplating. You can research accredited agencies for higher learning institutions on the U.S. Department of Education Website. This also includes Distance Education.
You should also think about what career goals you have and select your degree accordingly, regardless of studying online or traditionally on-campus. If you would like to eventually be a database administrator, you should seek at least a bachelor’s degree or at least serious IT training courses. If you want to be an information scientist, then you will need to continue to graduate level. Two year degrees will suit those that are looking for a position as web masters. Others still will need further instruction that is provided by a four-year degree program.
As you go down your list of potential online computer programs, research the strengths and the emphasis of each. Computer science programs have a tendency to be specialized, especially for graduate level. Whatever your course, the right degree program will be one that will prepare you for the career in computer science that you dream for yourself.
